The start of a new year often brings excitement, fresh energy, and big ideas about what’s ahead. For many little ones, teens and adults of high needs this “fresh start” can feel inspiring, but it can also feel overwhelming if goals are framed as something that must be achieved perfectly or quickly.

At EmpowerMe, we believe the New Year is less about resolutions and more about intentions, curiosity, and possibility, especially when supporting children and individuals with diverse needs.

A Gentle Approach to New Year Goals

In our recent adaptive yoga and mindful movement classes, we’ve been exploring how to approach the New Year in a way that feels supportive, joyful, and accessible. Instead of asking “What do you want to change?” we ask questions like:

  • What would you like to try this year?
  • How do you hope to feel?
  • What do you want to explore, learn, or experience?
  • Who do you want to spend time with?
  • How can you help at home or in your community?

This approach allows space for self-expression, reduces pressure, and honors that everyone’s goals look different.

Using Visuals to Support Understanding and Expression

One of the tools we love using in class are visual supports. Visual supports allow children and individuals of all abilities to explore ideas in a concrete, engaging way.

Using simple visuals with concise vocabulary participants can:

  • Choose activities they’re curious about
  • Identify places they’d like to go or things they’d like to learn
  • Reflect on relationships and community
  • Connect with simply vocabulary without feeling overwhelmed with choices
  • Share ideas through pointing, selecting, or communicating

This creates meaningful opportunities for mindful conversation, communication practice, and connection, without the pressure of having to explain everything with words.

Why Simple Visual “Vision” Boards Work So Well

Presented in a simple way these can help:

  • Build confidence in decision making
  • Support communication and language development
  • Encourage self-awareness and emotional expression
  • Promote flexibility and imagination
  • Create a shared family or classroom experience

Most importantly, they allow individuals to dream in their own way, at their own pace.

Bringing the Practice Home

These conversations don’t have to be limited to a classroom or clinic setting. Sitting together at the table, on the couch, or even on the floor with scissors and glue can be a powerful way to slow down and connect as a family.

Try:

  • Creating a board together and sharing ideas
  • Asking “Why did you choose that?” with curiosity, not correction
  • Revisiting the board throughout the year as a reminder of what matters
