When seconds counted, one Arizona teen didn’t hesitate.
During winter break, Perry High School sophomore Gabe Castro was working at a golf-course restaurant in Chandler when a man suddenly collapsed from cardiac arrest. While others froze, Gabe’s recent CPR training kicked in.

He immediately began chest compressions and continued for nearly 12 minutes, until paramedics arrived. The man survived, thanks in large part to Gabe’s quick action and calm focus.

“I just locked in,” Gabe said later. “I remembered what we learned in class and knew I had to help.”

His CPR training came from a school sports medicine course—proof that lifesaving skills stick when they’re practiced hands-on.

Stories like Gabe’s remind us that courage doesn’t always come with a uniform. Sometimes, it comes from a teenager who simply knows what to do.

Even young students can make a difference when they’re given the tools and confidence to act in an emergency.
