The holiday season can be filled with joy, celebration, and togetherness, but it can also feel busy, overwhelming, and overstimulating, especially for children and families who thrive on routine and regulation.

Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. In fact, some of the most meaningful moments of connection come from slowing down and sharing simple, intentional experiences together.

Here are a few gentle, family-friendly ways to bring mindfulness into your holiday season, right at home!

Warm Cocoa Breathing: One of our favorite holiday-themed mindfulness tools is Hot Cocoa Breath; a cozy, playful way to help children slow their bodies and calm their minds.

How it works:

  • Pretend to hold a warm mug of cocoa
  • Inhale through your nose to “smell” the cocoa
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth with an “ahhh” to cool it down
  • Repeat 4–5 times together

This simple breathing exercise helps regulate the nervous system while feeling fun and comforting, also perfect for chilly mornings, bedtime routines, or after a busy holiday outing.

Slow, Purposeful Movement: Mindful movement doesn’t need to look like a full class or 30 minute activity. During the holidays, movement with purpose can be incredibly grounding.

Try:

  • Taking a short walk outside and noticing the weather, plants, or sounds around you
  • Stretching gently together in the living room, focusing on connection not correction
  • Moving slowly on purpose, maybe reaching, twisting, or balancing and noticing how your body feels in through each movement

These connected moments help children build body awareness, focus, and a sense of calm through movement that feels meaningful rather than rushed.

Create Holiday Sensory Moments: Sensory activities can be a powerful mindfulness tool. Consider creating a simple holiday sensory jar filled with items like glitter, beads, bells, or small seasonal objects.

Invite your child to:

  • Shake the jar and watch the pieces settle
  • Take slow breaths while watching
  • Talk about what they see, feel, or notice

This offers a visual and tactile way to pause, reset, and connect during busy days.

Connect in Small, Intentional Ways: Mindfulness is often about being present together. Some of the most impactful moments can be:

  • Sitting on the couch and taking a few deep breaths side by side
  • Reading a favorite book together
  • Sharing a quiet moment without an agenda

These small pauses help children feel safe, connected, and supported, especially during a season filled with stimulation.

The holidays don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Slowing down, moving with intention, and finding small moments of calm can help families feel more grounded, connected, and present,  even during the busiest times.
